Slippery elm bark is the inner bark of the tree branches, and added to room temperature water has a slippery and mucilaginous consistency. Native Americans used soaked slippery elm bark as a natural bandages. Many tribes also wrapped slippery elm around stored food to prevent spoilage. Slippery elm also served as a food during famine and for making porridge for small children and elderly persons.  The mucilage coats and soothes the mouth, throat, stomach and intestines, making it ideal for sore throat, cough, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and diarrhea. Plus, it’s been even used to reduce symptoms of Psoriasis and lower stress and anxiety.

MAGICAL ATTRIBUTES

it is said to make the bearer impervious to the slander, malicious gossip, and lies spread by back-biting family members, jealous co-workers, and false friends who are trying to trouble your marriage or love-life.

Some folks place a small pinch of slippery elm in the corners of their rooms; they claim that this protects the home and rids the premises of evil. Others tell us that they carry slippery elm in a pocket or conjure bag for immunity from the harmful tales told on them by covetous neighbors, back-biters, and hidden enemies posing as friends.
