The practice of Ashtanga Yoga as taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois is first and foremost a therapeutic practice. This is why students are taught “Yoga Chikitsa” (also known as The Primary Series) first. Join KPJAYI Authorized teacher Meghan Kirk for a three-part exploration of The Primary Series with a focus on the elements of practice that are unique to this method. Over the course of three sessions totaling 9 hours we will explore the systematic, progressive way in which the Primary Series unfolds. In addition to breaking down the mechanics of each posture, we will identify missed opportunities to work on challenging postures in the foundational aspects of the practice, and we will spend time exploring some of the hands on adjustments and assists that Meghan and the teachers at Mysore Philadelphia give most frequently during Mysore sessions. This workshop series will be beneficial for students brand new to Ashtanga, as well as to students with an established Ashtanga practice who are seeking a greater understanding of the foundations of their practice.
Part 1 - Break down of Surya Namaskar the standing postures and seated poses up to Marichiasana A. During this session we will work to identify opportunities to build strength and find integrity in your practice, and look at ways to work on transitions between poses (including the elusive jump back and jump through!)
Part 2 - Break down of Primary from Marichiasana C through Urdvha Muhka Paschimottanasana, with a focus on keeping the body safe in deep forward folds, ways to work towards half and full lotus safely (including ways to modify for those with pre-existing injuries) and finding lightness and ease in the tricky transitions found towards the end of Primary Series, including Chakrasana.
Part 3 – An exploration of the mechanics of backbends including Upward Facing Dog and Urdhva Dhanurasana with an eye towards working on dropping back and standing up. This will be followed by an in-depth look at the closing postures of the series, including shoulder stand, headstand and freeing the breath during the final seated poses before taking rest.

Meghan Kirk is the director and lead teacher of Mysore Philadelphia, a traditional Ashtanga Yoga program which operates in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia at Amrita Yoga and Wellness in the morning hours. After several extended trips to study in Mysore, South India she was blessed with Authorization to teach the Primary and Intermediate Series of Ashtanga Yoga in 2015 by her teacher, R. Sharath Jois of the KPJAYI. Meghan also studies chanting and philosophy with Dr. M.A. Jayashree and M.A.Narasimhan of the Anantha Research Foundation during her yearly trips to India. During the year Meghan spends as much time as she can with her mentor and teacher, Christine Hoar of Ashtanga Montauk, and attends yearly adjustment and practitioners clinics with Christine and Nancy Gilgoff, from whom she has learned much about loving and sustaining a practice. She has also has participated in Primary and Intermediate Series intensives with David Garriuges and previously taught at The Ashtanga Yoga School of Philadelphia and Dhyana Yoga. She considers her practice to be a profoundly healing gift, and believes that through the cultivation of steadiness and joy in her daily practice she has also been able to cultivate those qualities in her daily life.
