Heavy Metta(L): Fire and Ice; YIN-yasa & Sonic Exploration w/ Justine Bacon
December 15th from 6:30-8:30pm
Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music …. with a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. (wikipedia)
Metta, in simple and overarching terms, is universal loving-kindness and compassion for all beings.
It is my pleasure to share with you a piece of my personal practice which joins two of my life's greatest passions- heavy metal music and yoga. The depth of this music is that of an iceberg, with what lies below the surface being far greater than what is above. "Away from the light of the sun, away I find what is really me." -In Flames
Let the music draw you deeper into yourself, and perhaps, shift your perspective on what is light and what is dark. In the Vinyasa (Yang) portion of class, the intense blasts of spastic sound will surely challenge your balance of mind and body in some moments, and yet, the electrified orchestra gives you strength during other intense moments. During the Yin portion, feel the coolness of release in your body, mind and spirit from sweet melodious harmonies.
Yogi Paul Grilley states that "Yin and yang are relative terms, not absolutes; We can’t point to the moon and say, “The moon is yin.” Compared to the sun, the moon is yin: It’s cooler and less bright. But compared to the Earth (at least from our perspective), the moon is yang: brighter, higher, and more mobile.” Through our exploration of both light and dark, how might your view be shifted?
